Dr. Walker explains that the pale, sickly appearance and bags under the eyes of a sleep-deprived person are due to the effects on the immune system. He notes that humans seem to have a “recycle rate” of about 16 hours, requiring 7-9 hours of sleep to reset health and physiology.
In a study by Sundelin, participants were photographed after a full night’s sleep and after sleep deprivation. Independent judges rated the sleep-deprived photos as less attractive, more sickly, and more tired-looking, proving the concept of “beauty sleep.”
